Every solar consultation eventually arrives at the same crossroads: lithium or tubular? The sticker prices push people one way, the engineering pushes the other. Here's the honest comparison we give our own customers.
Round 1: Upfront Cost
A 220Ah/12V tubular battery costs roughly ₦250,000–₦350,000. A 5kWh lithium (LiFePO4) battery costs ₦1,400,000–₦2,200,000. On day one, tubular looks like the obvious winner. But day one is the wrong day to measure.
Round 2: Usable Capacity
Batteries are rated by total capacity, but you can only safely use part of it:
- Tubular: discharging past 50% dramatically shortens its life. A "2.6kWh" battery really gives you ~1.3kWh per cycle.
- Lithium: comfortably delivers 80–90% of rated capacity. A 5kWh unit gives you 4.5kWh, cycle after cycle.
So one 5kWh lithium battery replaces roughly three to four 220Ah tubular batteries in real usable energy.
Round 3: Lifespan
- Tubular: 500–1,200 cycles with disciplined use — in Nigerian conditions, typically 2–4 years before noticeable decline.
- Lithium (LiFePO4): 4,000–6,000 cycles — 10–15 years of daily cycling, usually with a 5–10 year manufacturer warranty.
Round 4: True Cost Per kWh Delivered
This is the number that settles the debate. Total energy delivered over the battery's life, divided into its price:
- Tubular: ≈ ₦230–₦350 per kWh delivered.
- Lithium: ≈ ₦70–₦110 per kWh delivered.
Lithium is roughly three times cheaper per unit of energy actually delivered — the "expensive" battery is the cheap one.
When Tubular Still Makes Sense
- Very tight budgets where any backup beats none.
- Light-duty backup used only a few times a week.
- Temporary installations or rented apartments.
Tubular remains a legitimate entry point — as long as you buy it knowing the real trade-offs and never discharge below half.
Our Recommendation
For daily-cycled home systems in 2026, lithium is the clear choice — and prices have fallen every year. If the budget can't stretch, we'd rather design you a smaller lithium bank you can expand than a large tubular bank you'll replace twice before the lithium would have needed attention.
